If you have been shopping for a rental lately you may have noticed a real change it the market. There are very few rentals available, and those that are do not stay available very long. This has lead to a slight increase in rental rates (this trend is expected to continue), and increased competition over available units. Even though you may be an excellent tenant candidate, you may very well be “beaten out” by an even more qualified tenant.
Why do I bring this up? It is because to me this is a moral issue for our military. A PCS transfer is difficult enough on the entire family without having to go through the additional hassle of competing over the minimal amount of available rentals.
What can be done about this? We can start by asking our city leaders why they have turned down 2 different projects for housing that was designed primarily to meet the needs of our military. The city claims that the location of the project (s) was unsuitable due to it’s proximity to the high school, but per the general plan this land is designated multi-residential and therefore the projects met the criteria set forth in the general plan. The projects were “termed” affordable housing and I believe that is the reason the projects were denied. Unfortunately, many of our military members would qualify for such housing, but that did not seem to be a concern for the city council.
What are your thoughts????
